It was brought to my attention by my brother in law, Al, that I am 2 weeks behind in "52 weeks of images". Well, that was in January...which means I am WAY behind in posting!

I am NOT one for excuses...however, a lot has been happening since my last post: A LOT!...the times they are a changin'

To ring in the New Year I bought a new PC. Unfortunately it took two "duds" and much back and forth to Microcenter before I got the one I am using now. So, I am happily on my way with machine #3: a blazing fast piece of technology! Is there anything worse (doesn't matter if you ar a mac OR pc) than computer issues?

Okay, after ALL the computer issues...fast forward to what has been happening.

My goal for early 2010 was to re-define my brand, which also means updating my logo, website and blog. Decided to tweak my logo for a more refined and chic look, something that says: Classic, stylish, simple and elegant. Here are two examples of the "new" logo:

I chose gray because it signifies intellect, knowledge, and wisdom. It is perceived as long-lasting, classic, and often as sleek or refined. I included a soft yellow as it shines with optimism, energy, enlightenment and happiness. Yellow sparks creative thoughts and promise of a positive future.

...kind of sums up a bit of who I am and my promise to clients!

52 Weeks of Images

Week 2: Freckles the dog

I got a call recently from my next door neighbor Barb, saying she had someone she wanted me to meet. As I got out of the car, she AND her new puppy greeted me!

About 3 weeks ago, Barb and her husband adopted "Blitzen", now known as FRECKLES (you will see why as you scroll below). Freckles was adopted from the "Buddy Center", of The Dumb Friends League. He is a Lab/Border Collie mix, about 5 months old. He is the sweetest guy! Friendly and smart! Click here to see his available littermate.

Barb and I typically get together three times a week for an invigorating 2.5 mile walk...Freckles has been our energenic companion!

Happy New Year! Yes, time for resolutions...or should I say goals.

I recently had lunch with two photographer friends: Happy Sohi and Tracy Quintana before Sandy Puc's Family Tour 2010 seminar. The girls got to talking about some ideas for keeping us constantly shooting, inspired and motivated during the year. We collectively came up with the idea of 52 weeks of Images!

A few weeks ago a great group of MHP ladies: Heather Smith-Matthews Becky Young Cheri Pica Laura Pearson Christina Mascarenas met at Washington Park for a Pet Photography Workshop! It was organized by Jaime Rowe a local pet photographer. Before we started to photograph our "model" pooches, she gave a few pointers (no, not the dog breed) as to how to get the best shot.
Ok. Photographing the four legged kids...was like photographing the two legged kind. You gotta' be fast, keep them engaged and offer treats:) Oh...and if you can make weird noises, or have a squeaky toy that helps:)

American Quilter Magazine Cover Photograph

A few weeks ago I had a commercial session for American Quilter Magazine. I photograph quilts, quilt projects and step-by-step instructions that illustrate the "how to" for some pieces that will be featured in the magazine.

As I was setting up, editor in chief Chris Brown, shared the exciting news: My photograph of Cartwheel Constellation, designed by Gail Garber was selected as the cover shot for the January 2010 issue!

It will be on news stands December 8th. American Quilter magazine, published by the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, Kentucky, USA, is the top-ranked quilting magazine for new techniques, lifestyle articles, design help, and distinctive patterns. Learn more:

Tis the season...for family portraits!

I had the opportunity to photograph this fantastic family from Highlands Ranch twice! The first time was in August. We incorporated the session with their son's high school senior portrait. All was going well...until the family was sprayed by gale force sprinklers that were lurking behind a tuft of trees in Hudson Gardens! A little wet, but undaunted, we continued with with the session.

They were great sports about the event, but I still offered a re-shoot.

This time we photographed the session in Castle Rock where I live. The fall colors were ablaze and provided a beautiful backdrop. We also headed to my "secret location" for the portrait that they are using for their holiday card.

Hudson Gardens/Fall Leaves| High School Senior Photography

I got a call from a dear friend who informed me that her daughter needed her senior portrait done...ASAP! Turns out (after much family discussion) her daughter will be graduating a YEAR ahead of schedule!

Needless to say, I jumped at the chance to photograph this gorgeous teen! She is not only beautiful inside and out, but extremely smart and a huge advocate for womens' issues.

Hudson Gardens/Castle Rock | High School Senior Photography

Had a wonderful time photographing this gorgeous HS senior! The first part of the session was photographed at Hudson Gardens: we wanted to get the gorgeous flowers and some fall foliage for a colorful backdrop.

The second part of the session was photographed in Daniel's Park. My senior agreed to meet at the crack of dawn. (wow,it was cold that morning) I think we got some beautiful images with some of Colorado's most awesome views!

Silverthorne | Kids Photography | Budding Denver Broncos Fan

Friends from the Philadelphia area were in Denver for work and pleasure last week. The pleasure part took them to a lovely family townhouse in Silverthorne. They were there for some R+R, and to spend some quality time with their daughter, son in law and adorable grandaughter!

They graciously invited us to share Sunday Brunch with them and to watch the Broncos game...Couldn't help but get out the camera for the newest Broncos' fan! Even her eyes are "Broncos" blue:)

Engagement/Bridal Workshop

A few weeks ago I attended an Engagement and Bridal workshop organized by MHP member, Sheba Wheeler of Picture Your World Photography.

A group of about 11 photographers met at a secret location on the University of Denver Campus. There were 3 engaged couples and a newly married bride who graciously spent their Saturday morning posing for us. Here are a few shots from the day.

I had the pleasure to photograph a rising senior and his fun loving family at Hudson Gardens and downtown Littleton yesterday. I am SO EXCITED to share some of the images...

As you can see by the variety of shots...we really experimented from the classic and traditional to more edgy and artsy shots.

Happy spoted this corvette in the parking lot where we were shooting...wow!

I had the pleasure of photographing a fellow photographer's gorgeous daughter for her senior portrait. My "model" (and she surely worked the session) is a rising senior in High School.

We had to brave the typical Colorado late afternoon thunderstorms. Thankfully the storm passed and we were able to go to some of my favorite locations and get some amazing shots!

In Memory of Paul P Donohue

Time to get posting again...

As many of you know, my father, Paul Donohue passed away suddenly on April 8, 2009. He was 83 years old. He had been ill since December (I was with them for a month at Christmas time). Dad was recovering, in good spirits and optimistic. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack only days after returning home from rehab.

I am so grateful to the wonderful neighbors of the Great Outdoors for the out pouring of sympathy and help extended to my mom and our family. Also, I am truly thankful to family and friends who supported us during this difficult time.

We held a beautiful memorial in his honor. He is buried at The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

Dad had little interest in getting his photo taken...but I managed to get these two.

No, in this photo he doesn't have a "real" pierced ear. Dad decided to join in the fun when, during a National volleyball tournament, a group of Dad's got together and "sported" fake pierced earrings!

This was taken December '07. He loved his grandaughter...he was hoping to make it to see her graduate from high school next year.

Dad you will be missed...

BEST Blueberry Pie

Just had to post photos of the BEST Blueberry Pie made by my husband. While working out, he has a tendency to watch cooking shows! Probably in between exercising on the stairmaster and rowing machine, he saw this recipe on America's Test Kitchen.

He follows directions well: this truly was the best Blueberry Pie we have ever had! Didn't even need "a la mode".

It takes a while to create, but if you have the time and patience, it's well worth it.

Commercial Work

In addition to photographing weddings and portraits, I also do commercial work for "American Quilter Magazine". Typically, I photograph some of the step-by-step projects and quilts that are seen in the magazine. I'd love to feature some of the images from the shoots on my blog...but it's all top secret until the magazine is published!

What I can say: there is an enormous amount of talent, time, creativity and love in every piece. The quilts are exquisite. Please follow the link above for some examples of past articles and projects!

The magazine is located in Paducah, Kentucky. However, the editor of the magazine lives and works from home in Colorado. Recently she was featured in an article by Sherida Warner of the Grand Junction Sentinel. Follow the link for the full article.

A few weeks ago I had a maternity session planned with the step-daughter of dear friend. I was really looking forward to the session since the mom-to-be is gorgeous and was open to the photo experience. However, babies have a way of not waiting...turns out the little girl just couldn't wait another month to meet her mom and dad!

So...instead of the belly, I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph the baby!

My daughter's BFF from pre school modeled for photographer Ken Mellott and me at my new favorite location. Ken brought the big guns: his Alien Bee 800 and a huge softbox. I usually don't like to cart a lot of gear around...especially heavy stuff like lights, softboxes and battery packs...but wow...we wouldn't have gotten images like these without the beautiful soft light that these Bee's produce.

If we are in town for the holidays, part of the celebration preparation includes searching for the perfect Charlie Brown Christmas tree in a national forest. This year we ventured into the Woodland Park area south of Colorado Springs. Here is my My husband aka: "Clark Griswold" and daughter finding and "bagging" that special pine!

Special Olympics Fall Classic

Recently I got an email from Working with Artists asking photographers to volunteer to photograph the Special Olympics Fall Classic. I decided to photograph volleyball...a game which I am VERY familiar.(My daughter played club and varsity volleyball.)

The games were not unlike true Olympic games. Time was kept, rules in place and scores were recorded. The athletes were dedicated, focused, and competitive! It was my privilege to photograph such a worthwhile event and I am richer for the experience. So is my daughter who volunteered that day too!

I am always on the look-out for interesting locations. I recently "found" a wonderful site filled with Colorado nature at its best, an interesting red barn and old stone home. I'll have to do some research as to the history...it must have been a homestead; there's a dilapidated outhouse nearby!

Suggested this location for a family shoot...They were so up for the adventure! The girls were super models that day! They brought great outfits, attitudes and energy; it couldn't have been more perfect! Here are a just a few...

On our way home from the East Coast, we stopped in Illinois to visit with my husband's
brother and his family. His son Mark is a Senior in HS, so I got the opportunity to take his portrait! We had a blast finding interesting locations to shoot at a nearby park.
Mark is an excellent student, Eagle Scout, a cross country runner, and bowls for the
HS varsity team (nice letter jacket).

Camera Roadtrip

I was part of a group of 40 + photographers that descended on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall for Innovative Imagemakers(i2) Bride and Groom camera roadtrip. The activity of photographing Bride and Groom models peaked the interest of those on the Mall...there were so many photographers that it was rumored Barack Obama may be in town! HA. Here are two images from the shoot. The redhead reminds me of a Rossetti painting.

What I did on my summer vacation :)

I have recently returned from a month long, whirlwind, vacation to the East coast! It was an incredible experience!

My daughter and I travelled by car to NJ. The time went by very quickly and Tori did most of the driving. I think she was able to log in more than the 50 hours needed for her permanent license based on the amount of time behind the wheel this trip alone!

Here is a list of the fun things I/we did:

Tutoring session with Neil van Niekerk . It was a VERY informative session...I will post more later.

My daughter is a Junior in HS this year. With so many great schools on the East Coast we decided to tour a few: University of Pennsylvania where she also attended a Lacrosse camp.

Princeton University (We also visited a Cornell University fraternity brother of my husband who lives in the area.
a gorgeous campus and surrounding area. We also toured Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University.

We visited Philadelphia: Independence Mall, the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's grave. Since this is an election year visiting the site where our independence took place was quite humbling and gave more meaning to the process!
HAD to go to south Philly for cheese steaks! Sorry Pat's but Geno's steak sandwich was our favorite!

From NJ we continued on to visit my in-laws in Maryland. With my husband joining us we knew we would be experiencing historical adventures: Fort McHenry The tour of this monument was definitely enhanced by the National Park Ranger guides. We had an incredibly informative and energetic guide...plus, had the opportunity to get little known info from Ranger Scott Shear (spelling?) about the Flag: Star Spangled Banner which is being restored and to be displayed upon the re-opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

We took a day trip to Historic St. Mary's City: the site of Maryland's first capital. (I will post more images of that trip in the near future.)

Another informative and fun day was spent in Washington, DC. Lot's to see...but challenging on a very hot and humid day (yuck) (We sure missed dry Colorado on those choking humid days! )

After the Baltimore/DC area, it was on to Atlantic and Ocean City, NJ. It was wonderful to be by the water. Ok...and indulge in fudge, soft serve custard ice cream and saltwater taffy.

On our way home we stopped by St. Louis to visit my husband's brother and family. I had the opportunity to take my nephew's senior portrait...images I will post later. As we were getting closer to St. Louis my husband saw signs for Memphis, TN. Which meant....we had to take a detour to GRACELAND!

We toured Graceland then went into downtown Memphis to locate RENDEVOUS a BBQ restaurant that had been mentioned in a Food Network segment the night before. (what a coincidence.) THE BEST RIBS WE HAVE EVER HAD!!! Also headed over to Beale street to listen to some Blues.

On a very personal note: I/we got to visit with cousins I had not seen in probably 30 years! We spent time with my parents and my in-laws. We got together with brothers and sisters and friends some who we had not seen in years! (Took a side trip with a friend (from my single days) and her family to Hershey Park.)

Considering we were out of town for a month, the time flew by. Thank you to all our loved ones who made it a most memorable trip!!!

Courtney and Ryan's Wedding

I had the opportunity to work with photographer Ashleigh Weber as second shooter for Courtney and Ryan's wedding. Also helping to capture the day's events was photographer Brad Peterson of Imagetek Photography. The wedding was held at the "Grant-Humphrey's Mansion" in Denver...a beautiful, turn of the century "beaux arts" architectural showpiece.
I was a little concerned for the weather...because earlier in the day where I live (Castle Rock) we had torrential rains and hail that covered the deck!

OK...wedding photography is mostly about capturing the bride and groom...

However, when you have children this beautiful, it's hard not to keep the lens focused on them!

There were three brothers...two had on the cutest seersucker suits and saddle shoes...

Can't decide if they look like they belong in a Botticelli painting, at the palace of Versailles or in a Ralph Lauren advertisement! Both boys came into the ceremony ringing little bells. Yes, it was a show stopper.

Tis Wedding Season...Nicole and Chris' Wedding

I had the opportunity to second shoot Nicole and Chris' wedding with "young gun" photographer Ashleigh Weber. What a wonderful experience. Ashleigh is incredibly talented, hardworking and creative! Plus, a wonderful mentor too!

Inspired by Impressionism

"Homage" to the Impressionists...

My friend Pat Wilson treated me to the "Inspiring Impressionism" exhibit at the DAM. What a wonderful exhibit. I believe it ends this weekend, so if you haven't seen it...do so! Make sure to take the audio tour; it really enhanced the experience.

This is an excerpt from the Museum website: "Even the most revolutionary artistic movements are grounded in older traditions. Although the Impressionists’ work seemed a daring rejection of what came before, they did find inspiration in artists from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. Some revered those Old Masters, some rejected the traditions of the past, and others took their lessons and re-invented them to reflect modern life. In this extraordinary exhibition, you will see Impressionist works right next to the Old Master works that inspired them."
The images were captured while taking a walk on a trail behind Aspen Grove Mall. It was a gorgeous spring day...just enough cloud cover to make it comfortable as well as to diffuse the early afternoon sun. I love the "bokeh" that has been created...no photoshop filters were used post processing.

The images loosely remind me of an Impressionists' painting...visible brush strokes, (here bokeh evokes the brush) emphasis on light in its changing qualities and ordinary subject matter. There is also a feeling of of movement.

Many thanks to my Vegas Bud' Rachel Olsen for the invitation to join Mile High Photographers!

This is a fantastic group of photographers who get together to shoot and exchange ideas.

Recently a session at the Denver Art Museum was organized by Andrew Schaefer. Trash the Dress was the the theme of the shoot so it included Brides, a Bride and Groom, but also models who posed as an engaged couple and two teenagers as our Seniors.

Many thanks to the models (you were awesome) and the 25+ photographers who helped to make it a success!

RJ Kern met with a few of us before the shoot for his coffee-shop class. He showed us his slick "semi-homemade" softbox. (You have to check out his site and blog!)

Fit-Biz Photo Session

About 4 months ago, in order get a jump on lacrosse season, my daughter started training with Diane Gilbert, owner of Fit Biz personal training. http://www.fit-biz.net/ Diane developed a high powered cardio and strength routine for her to follow. My daughter was selected for the varsity team and we believe it was partly due to the pre-season training she received with Diane.

I have decided to become a client of Diane's too! Each week is something a little different: pilates, weight training, stability work, all of which promotes balance and core strength.

Early this year Diane told me she wanted to update her website. Here are shots from Sunday's "update" session. Mona,(one of Diane's clients) graciously offered her time to model/demonstrate some of the techniques Diane uses. Also on hand was another client, Jackie, Diane's IT specialist, who gave direction on the types of shots she was interested in for the website.

It was a FUN collaborative effort! Thank you ladies!!

Had a fun time photographing Leticia the other day. What a great kid; you would never know she's shy! Shot all of these by huge sliding glass doors in my basement. The light coming in was gorgeous...the best and most inexpensive softbox around!
